Light Sabers

EL01: Electro-Luminescent Light Saber.
This light saber was created from an old camera flash attachment, similar to some of
those used in the original Star Wars versions. The reflector and bulb holder were removed,
leaving just the battery tube and tube extensions. A nickel silver band was added with a
control box. The left side of the control box contains a on-off slide switch and the
side-mounted activation button. On the right side on the control box is the recharge port
for the transformer charging unit. Power is supplied to the sound effects circuit and
Electro-Luminescent (EL) "blade" assembly by eight NiMh rechargeable batteries.
The green EL blade slides into a 1/4" jack mounted in a plastic socket assembly in
the tip of the handle. A 5mm flashing green LED is mounted just in front of the control
box and lights when the power switch is in the on position.
Operating the unit without the blade installed will probably not harm the unit, it is
not recommended. There are no exposed pins, wires or other connections that carry the high
voltage to the blade base.
Key Features:
Chrome plated brass flash attachment handle
Green Electro-Luminescent "blade" (removable)
Flashing green LED when power is on
Nickel-Metal-Hydride rechargeable batteries
Sound effects from Star Wars toy Lightsaber
D-ring belt clip on base of saber

LED9: Transparent Light Saber.
Several different star wars novels describe Jedi Knights building their own Lightsaber.
In one, the source of the Lightsaber body was taken from a speeder bike hand grip. Other
novels touched on the diversity of designs that often reflected the culture of the Jedi's
particular race. One of the more common materials used in these same novels is
"transparisteel". I began thinking about what a light saber built from this
material might look like.
This unique Light Saber is the result. All internal batteries, circuits and switches
are plainly visible but also concealed by copper coils, scavenged model parts, ICs, and a
red and green blinking LED. For an unusual energy glow effect below the blade emitter, I
added a small ultraviolet lamp that glows when the saber is activated. An ultra-bright red
LED shines out of the emitter tip of the light saber.
Key Features:
Plexiglas and other plastic construction
Ultraviolet bulb in front end of saber, ultra bright red LED in tip.
Flashing green and red LEDs when active
Nickel-Metal-Hydride rechargeable batteries
Sound effects from Star Wars toy Lightsaber
D-ring belt clip on base of saber
